Asian Woolly-necked Stork

From early days of my wildlife photography, I am so happy to have this photograph. In all visits after that, I have never chanced upon this ‘near threatened’ species. Widespread from India to Indonesia, these birds are mostly seen in agricultural areas and in wetlands. They are attracted to grassland and crop-field fires where they collect to capture insects trying to escape the fire!

Scientific Name: Ciconia episcopus
Conservation Status: Near Threatened

Date photographed: January 2014
Location: Ranthambore National Park - INDIA
